Senior Peyton Sennet, one of the Dell Scholars, talks with a friend.

For the first time in district history, two students were selected for the 2015 Dell Scholars Program.

“I’m beaming with pride that we not only have one, but two recipients from Timberview,” AVID Coordinator Katrina Mabry-Smith said.

Seniors Sabrina Gonzales and Peyton Sennet were selected.

“I could not be prouder of these two young ladies,” Mabry-Smith said. “Receiving this scholarship is a huge honor, and these young ladies deserve it.”

Gonzales said that she had to double check for her name on the website.

“I couldn’t believe I was so blessed to have this opportunity,” she said.

Applicants for the scholarship are required to be enrolled in a college-readiness program.

“It’s only offered to AVID students,” Gonzales said. “I’ve been a student for six years now.”

Winners receive $20,000, a laptop computer, textbook credits and ongoing support to complete their undergraduate studies in college.

“I am beyond happy that I have a way to pay for school,” Sennet, who will be attending the University of North Texas in the fall, said. “Before this, I was worried.”

The program selects students who have a financial need, are ambitious in their studies and have overcome personal challenges in their lives.

“Regardless of what happens and what financial needs you have, you can get through anything you need to by keeping faith in God and having faith in yourself,” Sennet said.

Gonzales’ brother, 14, died from a stroke last December.

“I owe everything to God,” she said. “I honestly believe my brother is my guardian angel and is helping me through all of this.”

After all the financial aid and scholarships that were awarded to her, Gonzales will only pay $7,000 out of her own pocket.

“I will be attending Abilene Christian University in the fall, majoring in Nursing and minoring in Psychology,” she said.

Mabry-Smith said that hard work pays off.

“I encourage all students to apply for scholarships and do the work it takes to submit them,” she said. “I always love to see students get the recognition they deserve.”
