Influencers’ Unfair College Advantage

Xena Duly, Staff Writer

Colleges have a competitive field of applicants. The fact that wealthy influencers will take advantage of this selection process to get their children accepted into prestigious universities is pathetic.

Lori Loughlin, a beloved television actress, has joined this list and paid thousands of dollars to have her daughter’s SAT score skewed. Her daughter doesn’t even care about college, as she has claimed multiple times on her YouTube channel that she just wants to go to a party school. These influencers are using their wealth to screw over other viable applicants it’s time that they’re held accountable for their actions.

In helping their kids secure a spot in a prominent school, take the place of other kids who have worked so hard to have this opportunity squandered. The fact that her daughter, Olivia Jade, isn’t smart enough to do anything other than YouTube and party should not be an issue that affects others.

This situation is another example of the ridiculous power that the wealthy have over this country and its systems of power. She might be facing prison time, a year or two at least, and even if she does get it, she’ll have a luxurious punishment. Of course, the fact that she has billions of dollars to her name will factor into her court case which is egregious and unjust. The punishment should fit the crime. Just because she’s rich does not mean that she’s above the law.

What can we do to prevent this? Well, some schools are attempting to get rid of the SAT entirely, but that just presents a new set of problems. The students whose grades have suffered due to personal problems or unforeseen circumstances use the SAT and ACT to prove that they have potential, to prove why these schools should accept them. Hopefully, in the upcoming years there will be a solution to limit the power of the wealthy.
