The school’s theater department be hosting auditions for the musical Hairspray after school on Sept. 19-21.

“It’s a historical musical in a sense because you have the way America was before it got more tolerant,” senior Mario Aguirre said. “So, it makes for another interesting trait other than the fact that it’s Hairspray.”

Instructions on how to prepare for auditions can be found on the theatre website: https://timberviewtheatre.weebly.com/

“We have to get two songs together to audition,” Aguirre said. “Show Choir lifted my skills up a notch or two.”

Senior Olivia Starks said she enjoys the deeper meaning of the play.

“I like being a part of telling history in a way that everyone can connect with,” Starks said. “(I also like) to show (people) how far we’ve come as a nation, though we’re still fighting for equality.”

Director Melissa Danforth said that students are excited to audition for the show.

“We have such a great culture; this is the perfect school and the perfect students to do (the play) with,” Danforth said.

Starks said she has been preparing for the auditions since she found out about the musical.

“I’ve been vocal training, making sure I’m working on really feeling the meaning of the song I’ll be auditioning with,” Starks said. “I’ve also been working on analyzing my character and really exploring deeper into her and how she is.”

Starks said that the show could be debatable.

“I feel like any play can be controversial but with Hairspray I feel like we should welcome the controversy,” she said. “Bringing up something controversial and doing it right will open people’s eyes to things normally hidden.”
