Winter Guard Advances to Higher Classification Level

After performing at Mansfield High School, Winter Guard has been promoted to

Scholastic A.

“I’m very proud of the guard,” Captain Jessica Price said. “I’m glad that we kept one

goal and kept pushing. I feel like we all did it together and stayed focus to conquer

it.”

Scholastic A is a higher level of skills and techniques than Regional A, which was

the level the guard was at before.

“It’s been a long four years with different changes, so I just want to have the best last

year with my teammates,” Price said.

In the contest, the guard won third place but were .52 points from winning their

round.

“I thought we were going to get first,” Vanessa Zuleta said. “Once we calculated our

numbers, we were almost there.”

Freshman Zein Abubaker said that the last performance was better than the

rehearsal.

“The show made me tear up,” she said.

Director William Agustin said that his goal for the group was accomplished, but they

still need to continue to advance.

“(They need to) perform better and be more consistent on the choreography,” he

said.

Abubaker said that she has seen progress from the guard’s first competition and

last.

“Overall, (the guard) improved a lot,” she said. “There was more emotion to it and

the ending was perfect.”

Championships will be on April 11.

Price said, “By the end of the season, I want to have the best show I (have) ever had

of my guard career, performing with the people I love.”
