With a score of 54-32, the Varsity Girls Basketball team defeated the Summit Jaguars and became 10-5A Region 2 Champions on Feb. 23, securing a spot in the final four state tournament.

“We’re starting to play the best basketball that we can play,” Assistant Coach Jeannette Mitchell said. “This is the best time for us to peak as a team.”

Going into halftime, the team was up 35-10.

“When we all go out and play together as a team, we dominate our opponents,” senior Mia Napier said.

The team is on a 32-game win streak.

“The win streak doesn’t matter unless we can extend it to 34 games,” senior London Scott said. “All the effort we have put into this season is for one goal, the state championship.”

This is the second year the team has made it to the final four state playoffs.

“It feels great going back to state,” Napier said. “Not many teams get a chance at redemption. We’re going to make the best of this opportunity.”

Last year the team lost in the championship game against the Canyon Eagles, 47-45.

“These girls are focused at the task at hand,” Mitchell said. “They know what we have to do to win first place; finishing third or second isn’t an option for them, winning is the only goal.”

Tomorrow the girls will travel to San Antonio before their first game of the tournament on March 1, against the Kerrville Tivy Antlers.

“Nothing is going to stand in our way of winning the state championship,” Scott said. “When we lace up our shoes and step on the court Thursday, we’re there to win it all.”
