Varsity Football Team loses against Defending State Champion

With a close score of 34-32, the Varsity Football team lost against Highland Park last Thurs., Sept. 14, at Vernon Newsom Stadium.

“I felt like we played well but had a couple of mistakes that eventually cost us the game,” Head Coach James Brown said. “They (Highland Park) are the number 10 ranked team in the state and we feel like we had every opportunity to beat them.”

The boys also lost the week before.

“After losing we all wanted to come out with the win against Highland Park because we knew nobody thought we had a chance,” senior Danthony Boone said. “We had a short week of practice because the game was on a Thursday, but we all practiced hard every day to try and get the win.”

Though the team started strong the first quarter with a lead of 13-0, Highland Park took over the lead in the second half.

“I feel like the whole team overall had an amazing game,” senior Zachary Shepard said. “We didn’t get the result we wanted but they were the defending state champions. To only lose to them by 2 points was a good game. We had mistakes and we will fix those in practice.”

The preseason games are coming to an end and the team is getting ready for the district season to start.

“I believe that the regular season will be good to Timberview,” Shepard said. “We have been learning from our mistakes during our previous three games. We have done everything to become better and fix them.”

The next game is at home on Thurs., Sept. 21 against Red Oak.

“We expect our team to play hard and to continue to focus and cut down on mistakes,” Brown said. “We don’t want to peak yet but we want to keep getting better.”
