After beating Waxahachie last Tuesday with a score of 6-2, the Varsity Girls Softball Team is 3-3 and tied for fourth place in district.

“Winning makes me feel really good,” senior Lauren Garza said. “It’s a team effort and it makes us feel so much closer together. It means the work you put in is paying off.”

The girls had an early lead, scoring five times in the first inning.

“Our offense is strong this year and we work together to gain more runs,” senior Chelsea Luddeke said. “We are also loud in the dugout and that gets to the other team and helps us get closer.”

Head Coach Rachel Hudson said that the girls have grown closer since the beginning of the year.

“Staying supportive of each other on the field with positive talk and becoming a dominant hitting team has allowed them to do so well on the field,” she said.

The girls have several strengths that have carried them through the season, Hudson said.

“We’re very fast,” she said. “When we get runners on base. We are able to steal extra bases and move runners into scoring positions which is helpful because it makes the batter’s job a little easier.”

The team is currently tied with Summit, who they play tonight at home.

“We have to beat them to solidify a hold on fourth place and again when we play them in the second half of district,” Hudson said. “We must also beat some teams we didn’t beat the first round to improve our record and standing.”

In order to win today, Hudson said that they need to work on fundamental defense.

“We need to make sure that we make the routine plays so that we can secure outs when they are provided by the other team and keep solid contact with outside pitches,” she said.

The game starts at 7 p.m.

“We need to stay positive and hit in order to beat Summit,” Luddeke said. “As long as we are all hitting the ball hard and finding gaps, we will be okay. It’s always a team effort to win but it’s a great feeling to always come out on top.”
