After winning the home conference against district rival, Mansfield Summit, the Varsity Boys Basketball Team qualified for their first playoff game against South Oak Cliff on Wednesday.

“We’re playing well right now,” Coach Duane Gregory said. “We’re doing a good job of playing together and playing the style we’re successful with.”

The game will start at 7:30 p.m., at Grand Prairie High School.

“It’s a great feeling,” senior Lazarus Williams said. “This is what we’ve been working for.”

Junior Colin Hadnot said he knew he had to put in effort to attempt to make it to state with his team.

“At first, it was surreal because I finally made it (on Varsity) and that was my goal,” Hadnot said. “Now that I finally did, it was time for me to work.”

Gregory said the players had to overcome many obstacles throughout the season.

“The team has undergone a lot of changes,” Gregory said. “They have done a good job of sticking together through some tough times and adversity. They are coming out of the positive end.”

Williams said he looks forward to continuing the season.

“We all know (who) we’re supposed to be, we know our roles,” he said. “We’re willing to make the extra pass and do the little things.”

The team’s greatest strength is their defense, Williams said.

“We take it personal when people score on us,” he said.

In order to make it to the state championship, the team must win four consecutive games.

“Everything is amped up a notch in playoffs,” Gregory said.

The team is confident in their strategies, Hadnot said.

He said, “We know what we’re going to do, we’re going to execute and take that dub (win).”
