Three years after producing his remake of the gory flick “Evil Dead”, director Fede Alvarez is back on the scene with his latest film “Don’t Breathe.” The movie is suspenseful with a dark twist that will leave you speechless.

The plot starts with a blind man dragging Rocky (Jane Levy) down the street by her hair. This scene foreshadows the ending but doesn’t give it away. Living in a household with no father and a verbally abusive mother, Rocky makes it her responsibility to look after her younger sister, Diddy (Emma Bervovici) and promises to move them to California. In order to pay for the move, Rocky joins her boyfriend, Money (Daniel Zovatto) and Alex (Dylan Minnette) in a robbery. The target is a wealthy blind man’s home (Stephen Lang).

The trio believed they were going to make an easy profit, but little do they know they’re walking into a death trap of a house, filled with deadly weaponry owned and created by the blind man. Once inside the house and aware of the dangers, the three must find a way to survive and escape the man’s house before it’s too late, all while not making the slightest of noises, including breathing.

At this point the movie shifts from the blind man being most vulnerable to the thieves feeling the pain. Locking all the doors and barricading the windows, the man makes it nearly impossible for the three to leave the house alive, but he doesn’t properly secure the basement, where the thieves discover the chilling secret lurking in the house, giving the film an ironic twist.

In addition to the irony, the plot makes sure to keep its audience on edge with loud sound effects and intense scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. One scene in particular is when the blind man shuts all the lights off in the basement, temporarily blinding the thieves as well, in an attempt to detect and kill them. The thieves then try to locate one another in the dark basement and escape without encountering the blind man.

Although the film keeps you interested the whole time, it lacks gruesome horror which for some might be disappointing. However, the movie implements such suspenseful scenes that it makes up for it. Despite it being hard to really understand the man because he barely speaks, the acting in the film is incredible. I felt like I was there.

If you’re looking for a good scare or horror movie, this isn’t the film for you. Also if you’re sensitive to sexual references or violence beware that these are included in the movie, giving that it’s R rating. If you enjoy suspense and creative story lines, this is a must see and worth the money.
