New Powerpuff Girls Series Disappoints Old Fans

The Powerpuff Girls, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, have returned to Cartoon Network with an updated modern style. This is a remake of the 1998- 2005 series. However, they still have super powers, fight crime and save the day in the city of Townsville.

This is the second remake for Cartoon Network, following “Teen Titans Go,” which was a huge disappointment for long time fans with overused toilet humor and confusing plots.

Powerpuff fans are immediately let down at the beginning because the girls’ voices sound nothing like those in the original series. Also, since the series is recorded as if it were in the same time as the previous one, the new cast changes the characters identities completely. The girls have deeper voices, which is very odd and makes the show look like it was dubbed over.

Buttercup is most annoying character on this show. She makes many flat puns and never shuts up. Additionally, she is the most confused character because she can’t do anything right.

Other characters make appearances, but they don’t stay for long like the very memorable character, Mojo Jojo, the main antagonist in the old series. He is a green monkey with a helmet on his head and was in nearly every single episode in the first version. Now, he has only appeared once in the series so far, which is a shock because he was such an important character in the past.

Instead, new villains’ pop-up with stupid powers like Man-Boy, a lumberjack who can make steak come to life and has a stretchy beard. I don’t know who came up with that idea.

Some plot scenes were confusing like “The Stayover,” when three girls threw a party and woke up with a candy hangover. Suddenly, Bubbles was nowhere to be found. They decided to retrace their steps by going from one place to another, asking people where she was and have recurring flashbacks, which ended in an arcade. They thought Bubbles died so they came home depressed. In the end, it turned out that she was under a blanket with no explanation why.

If you watched the series as a kid, you will be disappointed. For a new audience, the show is not terribly bad. Plus, it just started so there might be some changes soon. The series is not for old fans but for the younger generation. It’s trying to reach their appeal, not our generation.
