Fall Out Boy Releases New Album after 4-year Long Break

Making a huge comeback from their four-year hiatus, Fall Out Boy (F.O.B.) does it again with their new album “American Beauty/American Psycho.”

Their album, which was officially released last month, filled fans with anticipation. The top song on the album, “Centuries,” was released back in September, followed by “Immortals,” which was featured in the popular Disney movie “Big Hero Six.”

“Centuries” was a song that had been on the radio for a while before the album was even released. Smart choice considering the song talks about being remembered and never being able to forget them. This goes along with them having disappeared, then making a comeback that was unexpected. A strong theme that this song portrayed was the band remaining true to themselves regardless of what people thought.

With “Centuries” being such an upbeat tune, it is accompanied with others that have a strong rock undertone like their opening title “Irresistible” and “Novocaine” and “Immortals”.

There’s also a change in tune with songs “Uma Thurman,” “Jet Pack Blues,” and “Fourth of July” which all have an indie nostalgic vibe to them while keeping it pop-punk. These really show the cheery side of the band and are just overall fun.

Lead singer, Patrick Stump, has a really powerful voice and knows how to use it to tell a story. The band slows it down with the titles “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” “Favorite Record,” and “Twin Skeleton’s.” They still kept a rock vibe but you could definitely hear the vocals, which were the main focus.

One huge problem people usually have with bands they love is if the artists remain true to their original style or change as a result of commercialization or arrogance. This has been a constant complaint with F.O.B. ever since their first top album “Infinity on High.”

I’ve been a huge fan of theirs since the beginning, but I have also started to notice some changes. Their song titles use to be long sentences, but now they’re mainly one-worded. Though people blame this change on their fame, I disagree. This new album definitely sounds different, but no band is going to have the same sound their whole career. There would be no reason to listen to their new music if people already knew what to expect. People grow with time and so does music.

This new album had me humming the songs throughout the day. It still has their soul in it. The second song of the album was “American Beauty/American Psycho” which was the album title choice. I especially loved this being the album title because it really represented the band as a whole. The popular movies that the title is named after tell two completely different stories, but the band used them both to express the different sides to their music. It really shows the contrasting emotions of being crazy but still having sweet side throughout the album.
