I’m No Angel.

This one sentence has sparked a controversy on social media about the true definition of beauty and how we view it. In an effort to promote self-love and a better outlook on beauty image, Lane Bryant has started a new AD campaign titled “I’m No Angel”. In the AD you see untouched plus size models embracing their features.

The slogan obviously opposes that of the Victoria Secret (VS) brand, which targets young girls with their glitter and bedazzled bras and the tag of Angel. However, we should be more captured by the beauty that Lane Bryant showcases in their ads because they have examples of all different kinds of body shapes.

In an interview with ABC News, Linda Heasley, CEO of Lane Bryant, said “There has been too narrow of a definition of what beauty is and we are challenging that by inviting everyone to join in and say what is beauty, what is sexy.”

I completely agree with Heasley’s statement because most young females are so caught up with what is perceived to be the “ideal body.” Basically telling us, if you don’t meet those standards then you aren’t beautiful, which is not the case.

I have never been a size 2 in my life and there is anything wrong with that. I have always had more “junk in the trunk” than other girls my age. Women and girls all around the world have to deal with ads that promote the “ideal type of body” and for teenagers that can be intimidating.

Another issue is that women don’t help the intimidation because they are scared that their beauty doesn’t meet the standards of society. Women should encourage young girls that their body shape doesn’t matter, that they are perfect and beautiful even if they don’t look like the VS Angels.

There are many ways to fight negative body image including loving yourself and realizing that you are your own shade of beautiful. Together women should take a stand and encourage others who are struggling with negative body image, and always promote a positive body image.
