Jessie J came out with her new album “Sweet Talker” on Oct. 14, showing the world a new side to her musical abilities. With having past troubles gaining popularity in the United States after being compared to Katy Perry and Adele, critics have not been easy on her with any of her music unless it was popular enough to top the charts.

“Sweet Talker” featured songs already well known such as “Bang Bang” with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj and “Burnin’ Up” with 2 Chainz. However, the less known songs such as “Masterpiece” and “Ain’t Been Done,” which was the inspiration for the album, have a lot of potential to become bigger hits.

As a whole, I did really like the album but I did not think it was her best. It was a new sound from her, but I was not impressed overall with the songs or lyrics. The lyrics were not as personal or meaningful compared to her older songs like “Who You Are.” Many of the songs are repetitive with choruses that repeat one word multiple times giving the impression that the song was rushed and not thought through.

The beats and instruments on the songs were great. I found the sound of each song really enjoyable and catchy, but the lyrics led it in a different direction.

I enjoyed the songs “Strip” and “Seal Me With A Kiss,” which has more of a “90s Mariah Carey” feel. They were both upbeat songs that could easily get stuck in your head all day. “Personal” is one of the few slower songs with more meaning. However, all three songs had lyrics that were just as repetitive as the rest of the songs.

Overall, I enjoyed the music but was mostly unimpressed. If the lyrics had been more meaningful and relatable, I think the album could have been 10 times better. I’m proud of Jessie J for continuing to be her own person and put out music regardless of the backlash she gets from critics. She continues to better herself and try to reach her goals of success.
