In order to update the recording technology in the Tech-n-fy studio, Librarian Jennifer Rike has entered the school into the Follett Challenge, a social media voting competition.

“Our studio allows (the students) to use technology that they cannot personally afford in an environment that is safe and without adult expectations,” she said.

There are 13 cash prizes that are being awarded that total up to $200,000.

“It helps my creativity,” junior Donnie Kaba said. “I can come in here and put all the words that I’m thinking (in) a song.”

Students and faculty can vote once a day per email.

“They can share it on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat,” Rike said. “Other high schools are doing the same thing, so we need to get out (and) vote.”

Winning the money would make it possible for the library to update the studio resources.

“(We would get) more microphones,” Rike said. “We might be able to look at getting an enclosed area that would be a better place to record.”

Rike said that she hopes everyone will make the effort to vote.

“Libraries have traditionally been analog,” she said. “We are in the 21st Century and we’ve gone digital, so we need to meet the students where they are now.”
