After a delay caused by adapter issues students in Child Development classes are receiving RealCare babies again, as part of a project.
“I had to order a new Communication Adapter from the RealityWorks company,” teacher Faith Elmore said. “It was a six-week shipping period.”
Before taking a baby home, students have to sign up and turn in a permission form explaining the assignment.
“I already signed up for my baby,” sophomore Brooklyn Stovall said. “I’m excited that we finally can start getting our babies.”
Every year robot simulators are assigned out during the second semester.
“I think the project will teach me responsibility and time management,” Stovall said. “I’ve been waiting for the baby project because it’s a big part of the class.”
Students are given the choice to keep the baby for two school days or take the baby home for the weekend.
“I chose to get my baby on weekdays because I’m usually busy on weekends,” sophomore Prince Balogun said. “It wasn’t very hard keeping the baby on school nights.”
Classes are being assigned their babies by order of class blocks.
“Taking care of the infant is imperative to understanding the real life responsibilities and work that goes into caring for an infant,” Elmore said. “Students will receive a pass to get out of class at 2:50 p.m., to come to Elmore’s Daycare and pick up their baby.”
Many found the assignment easier than they thought it would be.
“It wasn’t really difficult for me,” Balogun said. “Having the baby made me realize that it wasn’t as bad as I thought.”
Elmore said the goal of this assignment was to provide a real world experience in caring for an infant.
”Having a baby is a blessing but it’s always best to be prepared and capable of caring for the child first,” she said. “I want to showcase how difficult caring for a baby can be, especially while having responsibilities such as school and work.”
