Relay for Life, an annual walk held to raise funds and awareness for those diagnosed with cancer, will be on May 16 from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Katherine Rose Park.

“Relay is important because it is the signature event of the American Cancer Society in about 6,000 communities nationwide,” Community Manager Beth Anne Underwood said. “Over 54 percent of our national fundraising is through Relay For Life events.”

The funds raised will benefit the American Cancer Society.

“I’m so proud to be a part of this event,” National Honor Society President Mohammad Sultani said. “Relay for Life has always been something that NHS has been involved in.”

Underwood said everyone is encouraged to show up and walk.

“It’s beneficial for students because they are able to participate in a fun event that is making a difference,” she said.

Last year, the NHS raised money in several ways.

“We were able to give hundreds of dollars to the American Cancer Society by selling food, items or even charging to play a game at the event,” Vice President Ife Obayan said.

She said they are hoping to gather additional funds.

“My goal this year is to help us raise more, so we can give more,” Obayan said.

Though Sultani said raising money and awareness is the primary goal, he feels there is a more important benefit.

“Being a part of this is a truly amazing thing especially since we are doing it together, as a community,” he said. “That’s what makes it so special.”
