Because of a change in federal law, schools in the district are no longer allowed to sell chocolate and cookies inside of the building.

“I can understand the purpose for the new law that was passed,” Senior Class Sponsor Kimberly Pena said. “It just makes it difficult for us (the senior class) to fundraise for one of the best activities of the year.”

The senior class officers now have to find new ways to raise money for prom.

“I feel cheated because everyone else had a reliable money source for prom but now we (the class of 2015) have to start from scratch,” senior Abi Williams said.

The prom budget for this year is $45,000.

“If every senior pitches in, then there will be more opportunities to make more money,” Senior Class President Hailey Hargis said. “More people involved equal(s) an increase in money.”

There are different options to fundraise food, Pena said.

“We are able to sell cookie dough, and it will be sold during the spring time,” she said.

The prom committee is working on other fundraising opportunities.

“We wanted to try to get away from food, so we’re working on Spirit Activity Nights such as Alley Cats,” Pena said.

Pena said she is confident in meeting the expectations this year.

She said, “I have complete faith that we will be able to have the prom that our prom chair has envisioned for our senior class.”
