The Weekend Backpack Program is now being offered to students in need.
“The program sends food home on Fridays,” Counselor Tonya Willis said. “Students can be well fed over the weekend.”
The whole point of the program is so students who do need food are provided with a bag containing food items including cereal, granola bars, instant noodles and other foods that can be easily prepared by students.
“A lot of students depend on the cafeteria for food to eat,” Willis said. “It’s a great program.”
The bags are available for pickup in the counselor’s office on Fridays, but can be provided throughout the week if needed.
“There is no sign up or verification,” Willis said. “I rely on parents reaching out to me or maybe teachers who notice a kid who seems hungry.”
Students in need should see their counselor.
Willis said, “It’s important for students to know it’s discreet so they are comfortable with getting it.”
