With a district record of 7-1 last season, the Varsity football team faces off against Denton Ryan High School in an away game on Sept. 5.
“Our toughest opponent is going to be Denton Ryan or Argyle,” senior Sean Larry said. “They play very disciplined football.”
Six out of the 9 teams on the schedule made the playoffs last year. Seven out of the 9 are pre-season ranked in the top 15 in DFW.
“We have many tough opponents,” Head Coach Robert DeSanto said. It would be a lack of respect to all our opponents if we single out one. Our district is loaded.”
After losing round one of playoffs to Wakeland last season, the players hope to make it further.
“We made some great additions and made some major subtractions with players and coaches, so it’s hard to say,” Larry said. “I believe this team will go deeper in the playoffs.”
The team lost key players like wide receiver Cameron Bates and quarterback Zuric Humes.
“This team is more talented and more seasoned,” DeSanto said. “However, just less depth.”
Because of the high temperatures, practice was moved to the mornings.
DeSanto said, “The team has adjusted well and we got a lot of time to work in full pads that we wouldn’t have gotten if we hadn’t moved in the morning due to the heat.”
The team faces Argyle on Sept. 13, at Vernon Newsom Stadium.
“We will have a productive season and have lots of games,” Larry said. “Come support us and make the games live. We play better with fans in the stands.”
