Winning 34-1 overall in their regular season and with a consecutive winning streak of 30, the Varsity Girls Basketball team aims to rise to number one in the state after advancing to playoffs.
“We only have one goal,” senior Kamryn Wilson said. “Win all seven rounds and be state champions.”
Senior Chrishawn Coleman said this season has been different as their schedule had the most variety by far.
“This year is far more interesting than past seasons,” Coleman said. “We started with one of the hardest schedules in the state playing 6A, 5A and 4A defending state champs and beating them all.”
After defeating Arlington Seguin 95-22 on Feb. 6, the team began preparing for playoffs.
“Our team is focusing on more of fine-tuning,” senior Emilee Jones said. “We also want to tweak the little things and stay sharp.”
The girls’ basketball team has made it to playoffs every year since the school’s opening.
“We are focusing on execution,” Coach Kit Kyle Martin said. “A high level of conditioning and playoff planning on the daily.”
Coleman said the seniors are hoping to end their final season on a good note.
“This season has a lot more riding on it than past seasons,” Coleman said. “Due to most of our players being seniors, the level of seriousness is also greater.”
Martin said stress continues to build more as they progress in the season.
“I put more pressure on myself than anyone else ever could,” Martin said. “That’s why I chose this career. It’s not for the weak at heart, but the rewards are incalculable to me.”
The first round of playoffs will be this Monday, Feb. 12 at Flower Mound High School against Lake Dallas.
“We have our expectations at the very highest level,” Martin said. “Our plan is to win it all.”
