The movie is afoot

The name Sherlock Holmes, a detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is familiar to anyone who hears it. We know all about how he solved mysteries with his amazing observational skills. However, we don’t know much about his younger sister Enola.

When I first heard about this movie a few months ago, I was instantly intrigued.  I’ve always loved the story of Sherlock Holmes in general and was excited to see his younger sister in action. Millie Bobby Brown, from Stranger Things, co-stars with Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, Helena Bonham Carter and introduces Louis Partridge (who is my new favorite person). The cast is amazing and they all worked together very well.

The year is 1884, Enola is the youngest child in the Holmes family, along with her older brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock. She spends most of her time with her mother who taught her everything, from learning word games to fighting. However, her world changes when she wakes up on her 16th birthday, to find out her mother is missing. However, her mother left clues for Enola to find her.

Enola soon learns Mycroft plans to send her to a private school for young ladies, so she leaves in search of her missing mother while outsmarting her famous brothers. There she runs into a lord named Tewksbury, who is also on the run, and the two go in search of finding their own path.

First impressions, I really liked the film in general. It has something for everyone, including action, romance, drama and more. It was exciting seeing the characters in a new adaptation and the storyline was creative. I found myself laughing and was pretty surprised at the plot twist toward the end of the movie.

Enola Holmes was supposed to be released in theatres however due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix acquired distribution rights to the film as opposed to it being released by Warner Bros. Pictures. This was a very smart choice, due to the fact that the movie is the highest rated film of the year on Netflix and the UK in a matter of days.

The details in the movie are amazing to marvel at. From the costumes to the details in the sets, the sets are beautiful to look at and really give the audience an immersive experience.

I totally recommend watching it on Netflix. A sequel is already in discussion.

It’s a fresh movie involving such great characters as well as bringing new fun actors into the light while continuing the tale of the Holmes family.
