Top 5 Holiday Classics
As the temperature drops to sweater weather, it is the perfect time to snuggle up in a warm, cozy blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and watch the perfect holiday movie.
ABC Family makes it a lot easier to find one with their 25 Days of Christmas special where they show different holiday movies every night until Christmas. Out of all the films, here are my top five holiday classics.
Home Alone
When little Kevin McCallister gets in trouble the night before his family leaves for their trip to Paris, his mother makes him sleep in the attic. The next morning they accidentally leave without him, leading him to believe that his wish to have no family came true. However, as he enjoys having the place to himself he realizes two men are planning to rob his house. To save the day, he must plan multiple traps and tricks to defend his home.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas
The Grinch is a mean, grouchy creature living in a cave with a heart “two sizes too small.” Not too far away is the town of Whoville with happy and cheery Whos. The Grinch never had a good childhood because he was made fun of for his appearance, so whenever Christmas rolls around he plans to ruin it for the Whos by stealing presents, trees and feasts. After taking all the Whos had for Christmas he expected to see tears and sorrow. However, Cindy Lou and the rest of the Whos united together to sing and not let it ruin their day. It is then that he realizes that the holiday is about more than presents and receiving but rather coming together and enjoying time with loved ones. He then returns all the presents and is invited to their feast. His heart suddenly grows three sizes larger.
A Christmas Story
Ralphie Parker wants one specific gift for Christmas: A Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle with a compass in the stock and “this thing which tells time.” However, several people in his life are disapproving and warned him that he will “shoot his eye out.” When he rushes to open his presents, he receives good gifts but not the one he wanted which leaves him disappointed. His father then directs Ralphie to look at the one last present that had been hidden: the one he dreamed of. While playing in the backyard with his new toy, the BB shoots back and knocks his glasses off, making him think he actually shot his eye out.
The Polar Express
On the night of Christmas Eve, a boy hears a train outside and learns it is en route to the North Pole. Though bewildered, he still gets on the train and finds many other children. He began seeing magic-like occurrences in the simplest things like being served hot chocolate. Golden tickets are hole punched ever so often by the conductor. On its journey, the train encounters multiple obstacles. The main theme of the story is that in order for you to get to the North Pole, you have to believe.
Elf
This hilarious Christmas classic focuses on the life of Buddy, who accidentally made it back to the North Pole with Santa Claus after he dropped off presents at the orphan’s foster home. He grows up around the elves and their holiday cheer. Even going to school with them and wearing the same clothes (although they had to be customized for his human size.) When Buddy overhears elves discussing his inefficiency because he is human, he then understands why he isn’t like everyone else. After Papa Elf tells him the truth of who he is and where he came from, Buddy decides to travel to a magical, mystical place called New York City where he meets his real dad. He goes through many adventures including being a mall elf, meeting the girl of his dreams and helping Santa fly his sleigh powered by the people of New York’s Christmas spirit.
