Author of Harry Potter Announces 12 Days of Christmas Special

Tiffany Le, Staff Writer

Christmas is just around the corner, but we must have been very good Muggles to receive such gracious gifts from J.K. Rowling, the author of the world famous Harry Potter series.

It has been six years since the last Harry Potter book, “The Deathly Hallows,” was released, ending one of the most popular series worldwide. However, the Harry Potter fandom has continued to grow. Rowling has kept her fans interested with Pottermore, a fun interactive website that allows the player to interact along with their beloved series. The site reveals much insight and details not seen within the main series.

Some time ago, the members of Pottermore received a newsletter announcing J.K. Rowling’s newest Christmas project. From Dec. 12 to Christmas Eve, she will be giving us short stories, spells, potion recipes and so much more, all revolving around the magical world. They are perfect gifts for true fans like me!

The site’s official blog reported, “We’re feeling extra generous this year, so we’re bringing you early gifts this Christmas. Starting Friday, December 12, we’ll be releasing a festive surprise for you every day at 1 p.m. GMT (8 a.m. EST).”

Yet, it is not easy to access these gifts because “even Pottermore wouldn’t be that generous.” Those with a Pottermore account must solve that day’s riddle in order to receive the gift. Others outside of the fansite are only given excerpts and reviews, but not the full story. However, as my gift to you, I will tell you about my experience when I read the first stories.

After solving the riddle (the answer was a hint to the story itself), I read a short story about Cokeworth, hometown of Severus Snape, Harry’s Aunt Petunia and his mother, Lily. Rowling gives us information about the town and its role within the series since it is the place where Snape met the two sisters and helped convince Lily to become a witch.

Ironically, Cokeworth was the town in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in which Harry’s Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon and Dudley Dursley fled to in an attempt to escape the Hogwarts admission letters sent to Harry, despite being the place where Lily found her magical abilities.

The second story contained insight on a character that Rowling killed off. His name was Florean Fortesque. Initially, she was to have him kidnapped then rescued by Harry and his friends, but eventually removed him from the plot line, having him killed by Voldemort. Yet, that wasn’t the only surprise. Rowling included bits of the Leaky Cauldron’s history.

As the days continue on, Harry Potter fans wait in anticipation for more. Short stories that we hope to be lengthy just like her Thanksgiving special of Dolores Umbridge or the tale of a middle-aged Harry released earlier this year. Recently, there have been rumors of a story that will be released during this Christmas Special, revolving around Harry’s rival and childhood enemy, Draco Malfoy.

However, the only way to find out and get to these stories is to be a member of Pottermore. Signing up is free, but don’t just join for the stories, join for the fun as it takes you deeper into the world of Harry Potter.
