New Album Shows Different Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s new album has a whole different feel to it.

After her bubbly, cotton candy stage in Teenage Dream, Katy Perry releases a more mature soundtrack than anything she has every done. She reveals a new side of herself in her latest album Prism.

The album features 16 tracks and opens with the hit single “Roar”, which is currently ranked Number 7 on the iTunes Top 100. This was an excellent single to release first because her fans know what a challenging time she had with her divorce. The powerful stomping beat with the catchy chorus “Cause I am the champion and you’re gonna hear me roar” lets her fans know that she is back.

Besides “Roar”, two other songs “Dark Horse” and “Unconditionally” have already hit the iTunes chart. “Dark Horse” features Juicy J and was ranked Number 18 at press time. Perry experiments with hip-hop styles and sings, “So you wanna play with magic/ I come at you like a Dark Horse.” The song seems so different than anything she has done before. It’s catchy beat will eventually make it a fan favorite.

Like most of Perry’s songs, “Birthday” and “Legendary Loves” have a fun upbeat tone, which she has become known for. Both give off a feeling of cheerfulness, bliss and a surreal urge to dance. In “Birthday”, Perry sings about every day being his birthday which gives off a throwback feel to her last album’s bubbly pop song “Last Friday Night”. The title “Legendary Lovers” gives off such a jungle-like, tribal feeling with a lot of drums and fun beats.

With songs like “Unconditionally”, “Double Rainbow” and “It takes Two”, she shows off her vulnerable, more romantic side. The song that seems to shine the most off the album is “Unconditionally”, which is ranked Number 23 on the iTunes Top 100. Perry declares her undying love for someone no matter what their flaws might be. This song sends a similar message as her past single “Firework”, that expresses the message of acceptance of all beliefs. “Double Rainbow” features a soft, unique sound with Perry singing, “They say one man’s trash, is another man’s treasure/ When I found you it was pitter patter”, as a form of her realization of love.

“By the Grace of God” seems to be the most personal and revealing track. She starts singing in ways she has never tried before, “I thank my sister for keeping my head above the water/ When the truth was like swallowing sand.” Throughout the song, Perry sings about being defeated by a breakup and declares she will pick herself back up.

All the songs will get stuck in your head from the fun upbeat tunes to the deep emotional feelings she explores. It seems like this album covers the wide range of emotions from a break-up ballad to discovering who she truly is.
