Hit Song Writer Releases Powerful Album

After years of trying to perfect his craft, British singer, songwriter and producer Sampha Sisay final released his long-awaited album “Process,” on Feb. 3.

Sampha has been in the shadows his whole career as a songwriter and producer for famous artists like Drake, Kanye West and Solange. Although he is an amazing lyricist and instrumentalist, Sampha still believed he had more to offer. He began to focus on his vocals and writing for himself. After four years of him going through the transition from producer to solo singer, he is finally ready to let his voice be heard and vision seen. “Process” is his platform to do so.

Sampha unleashes a symphony of unique sounds on this album. He uses anything that makes a sound to produce a unique element of distinctive instrumentals. It could be the soothing plucks of a piano key or heart-wrenching strokes of a violin chord. The combination of calm and frantic helps the album lay down a tone of uncertainty. The listener is unable to anticipate what’s going to be played next.

Another way Sampha adds confusion is the use of his vocal range. He can sing the same lyric on two different tones, for two different meanings and it just leaves you stunned. Once you fully take it in what the album has to offer, it plays in your head like a dream. You can see and feel every poetic lyric and beautiful sound.

We are first meet with this unique musical blend on “Plastic 100c” then “Blood on Me.” “Plastic 100c” is one of the calmer songs of the album. Sampha addresses all of the pressure he’s been facing in his life, from his mom’s battle with cancer to the label pushing him to make a successful album. He explains how he is on the edge of wanting to give up hope but knows if he does, then life will only get worse. Right when you think all hope is lost, the song cuts off. Then with “Blood on Me,” listeners jump right into a fast tempo melody and the extreme tempered voice of Mr. Sisay. The message is clear. Although everything he loves is slowly weakening and he feels alone, there is still fight in him to push through this rough time. The message of hope to himself is what makes this track so powerful.

Track four “(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano,” may be the best song on the album and of his career. The listener gets a chance to hear a duet of Sampha’s gorgeous voice and the piano’s beautiful melody while he confesses truths never spoken before. Just like anyone confessing, he starts off shy but then finishes with a powerful message of how much his music helped him cope with life.

The album then again takes another shift on “Under.” The song talks about what love has to offer. He compares the girl he loves to an ocean storm, a beautiful destruction of the sea of his emotions. He is under her current and now he must ride the waves until the storm ends. He understands how bad their love is but can’t seem to shake it.

Track ten “What Shouldn’t Be” is the last song on the album and a farewell to the listener. One last confession, one last message of hope. Sampha talks about how he is afraid of what’s to come in his life but with every reach at fame there’s another hurdle. He talks about the death of his mother this past September, while he was recording the album. He doesn’t know what else to expect in life but he knows that he must stay positive if he wants good things to come. This is the last message to his listeners, to never give up hope and stay strong.

Process is a masterpiece and everyone should give it a listen. You can stream it on Apple Music today or buy it on iTunes for $10.
