To recognize Cancer Awareness, MISD is continuing Colors for Cancer this year.
¨Breast Cancer runs in my family, so this means a lot to me,” senior Makya Karnes said. “I’m wearing pink because it’s my favorite color, and it’s my favorite dress-up month in addition to Pink Out being my favorite event.¨
On the first Monday of every month, staff and students are encouraged to wear a color that represents a specific type of cancer awareness. If a specific cancer isn’t listed, participants can wear multicolor or lavender to show support.
¨It’s a tough day, but it makes me feel good that it’s being talked about and celebrated,¨ Administrative Assistant Kayla Vazquez said. ¨I wear pink because it specifically embraces Breast Cancer, which is what my aunt and best friend had. I feel like they should (honor) it more.¨
Colors for Caring days will be Oct. 6, Nov. 3, Dec. 1, Jan. 12, Feb. 2, March 2, April 6 and May 4.
¨I like wearing pink for Breast Cancer,” senior A`mya Durgan said. “I feel like the day brings people together as well as helps with donations.¨
Counselor LeeAnne Grommesh said it’s good for the community because it raises awareness for those who suffer with cancer.
¨These events give me many mixed emotions,” Grommesh said. “I appreciate the recognition and I love the symbols that everyone represents during these times.”
