Theatre Hosts Annual Summer Camp for Kids

In order to expose first through eighth graders to acting, the theatre department hosted a week-long clinic from Aug. 8-12.

“It’s just a good way to get the kids to do theater that don’t get to see it until junior high,” Head Director Melissa Danforth said.

In the mornings, the kids learned about improvisation which is acting without a script.

“Then we switched over to the actual rehearsal process,” Danforth said. “They learn a lot of information in a really short period of time.”

Senior Sydney Jones volunteered as a camp counselor.

“I taught movement and dance,” she said. “The younger kids would sometimes get frustrated so we had to take it slow, but the older kids loved it and were always having fun.”

Theatre President Kacie Pimentel said she enjoyed helping the children.

“My favorite part of camp was teaching the little kids and doing theatre things with them,” she said.

Eighth grader Wesley Ferris said he enjoyed working with the upperclassmen.

“I liked the camp because the high school volunteers were engaging and gave me a glimpse at what theatre would be like,” he said.

Jones spent the week choreographing the mini-performance, which concluded the camp.

“There was a total of five dances,” she said. “It took about an hour to choreograph each (one).”

Danforth said she loves seeing the returning students who participate each summer.

“(I) have been doing this for a long time,” she said. “Those little kids have grown up with us and some of the eighth graders started as kindergartners. It’s so much fun to come back in every year and they get better.”
