Boy on Winter Guard Embraces Role as Only Male Member
It feels as if the weight of the world is on his shoulders.
All the members are counting on him to finish the last scene of the show before scores are written down. He runs toward the chair with his flag as his girlfriend sits down. Everyone’s attention is on the couple. Holding her, he looks into the eyes of the girl that he knows he’s about to crush. The crowd gasps as he pulls his hands from her and walks away from her life forever. He knew that they just wouldn’t work out.
Sophomore Luis Camacho plays the role of the heartbreaker in the Winter Guard show.
“I wanted to find something for me to be dedicated to,” he said. “The guard makes me feel as if I’m a part of something.”
Camacho now has the leading part.
“It worked out,” Agustin said. “The entire show is based on a breakup between a boy and girl.”
Winter Guard is not just for girls.
“Over the past couple of years more and more guys are joining guard,” Director William Agustin said.
Last year, Camacho auditioned and didn’t make the cut.
“Despite the time I failed, I tried again to get a spot on the team,” he said.
Camacho said that he had to learn how to be patient when the girls are changing.
“I can’t really just grab my flag, go in there and invade their privacy,” he said.
Freshman Alyssa Munoz acts as Camacho’s girlfriend in the performance.
“We both (cooperate),” she said. “We have to work together to make sure the whole show is good.”
Munoz is friends with Camacho outside of guard.
“We just hang out and have fun,” she said.
Agustin said that Camacho is an easy member to teach.
“He understands what he needs to correct after the correction has been made,” Agustin said.
In the last scene, Munoz said that it’s difficult to interact with Camacho.
“At the end, when he’s supposed to break up with me, his face (is) hard for me to look at because I laugh,” she said.
UIL eligibility rules apply to Winter Guard as well.
“The guard helps me feel dedicated to pass,” Camacho said. “I commit to doing my homework, so that I don’t let them down.”
He has to be a role model for others, Camacho said
“It feels as if I should practice more and be precise at what I do,” he said.
He is not the only male on winter guard as a whole.
“There are many boys (on) other (schools’) teams too,” he said.
Overall, Camacho has gotten better over the season, Agustin said.
“He has improved in all aspects of the activity,” he said.
Munoz said that she likes working with Camacho.
“He’s a good and dedicated performer,” she said.
Camacho said that he enjoys being on the team.
He said, “I love doing what I do.”
