Varsity Wins Homecoming Game
With a score of 47-21, the Varsity football team won their game against Everman H.S. at Vernon Newsom Stadium, in Mansfield last Friday night.
“We played a good game but there is still room for improvement,” Junior Chance Collins.
Varsity is 2-3.
“We have played high-ranking teams in the state of Texas,” Coach Guy Humes said.
“The season is going to be difficult but we knew that before we came in.”
After not scoring last game, Varsity scored six times total.
“We had a few key plays, our running back (Jaylon Woods) did a good job this game,” Humes said. “Collins (wide receiver) also got us off with a big catch.”
Varsity was able to bounce back after losing three games in a row.
“Special teams did an onside kick and we recovered the ball,” Collins said. “Which cost us to get a better momentum in the game.”
Despite being on the court during halftime for Homecoming, players like Gabriel Hanselman-Salak said they remained focused.
“It made us realize that we have to practice harder,” Hanselman-Salak said. “Saturday after losing to Colleyville Heritage, we came together in the locker room to have a heart-to-heart.”
The away game is next Thursday, against Seguin H.S. at 7 p.m.
“Seguin is undefeated,” Hanselman-Salak said. “It’s a big game due to the rivalry, however if the right plays go in and are executed at a high level, we could beat them with ease.”
