In order to prepare middle school students for the Algebra 1 EOC this Monday, AVID members have been tutoring at Coble.

“I feel really good about tutoring them,” senior Layla Axmed said. “They’re younger than us so we’re helping them be successful instead of leaving kids behind.”

The tutors focus on helping students through concepts they don’t understand.

“We teach them different techniques and strategies we picked up that we can pass on,” junior Alexia Henson said.

Castillo said student tutoring is effective.

“Many have a hard time relating to teachers because they communicate differently,” he said. “Being closer to their age helps me explain things from a perspective that they will understand.”

The tutoring has been a learning experience for Castillo.

“If I can help other students understand a math problem that they wouldn’t have grasped otherwise, I’m working for something better than myself,” he said. “And that’s a great accomplishment.”
