Held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, the 82nd Golden Globes Awards were presented on Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. on CBS and Paramount Plus. This year, particularly gained more traction due to the abundance of talented nominations. Critiques and fans tuned in to witness the winners in each category ranging from film to television. Let’s find out more about who won, and who was the anticipated winner in each category.
Starting off the night with good energy, comedian Nikki Glaser opened up presenting herself as the host. She made sure to include witty and lighthearted jokes directed toward those who were nominated, receiving many smiles of approval.
Leading the trail with 10 total nominations that night was Jacques Audiard’s ‘Emilia Pérez’, breaking the record of previous films with the second most golden nominations. In the end, the film took home four globes in the categories of Best Motion Picture in musical or comedy and Non-English Language, Best Original Song in a Motion Picture and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.
All of these accolades were unexpected for the film considering it was head-to-head with other amazing projects like Wicked and The Substance. Nevertheless, there was constant backlash directed toward ‘Emilia Pérez’ achievements. Netizens have commented comparing the online reviews to their personal opinions about how the film misrepresents a minority and caters a different perspective to a plot that is being lived on a day-to-day basis.
This year continued to rock with the films that hosted emotional meanings and shocked the audiences once the winners were announced. The first main award, Best Motion Picture Drama, was given to the Brutalist, which features Adrien Brody as the protagonist. The film was up against: The Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys and September 5. Earning a second award in Best Male Actor for that film was none other than Adrien Brody for his performance as László Tóth. He showed a heartfelt and charming personality in his speech, not forgetting to mention his fellow runners in the category and all those who were in the collaborative effort of the production.
Finally, Best Female Actor was taken home by Fernanda Torres for ‘I’m Still Here.’ This was the only Golden Globe received by this production. It wasn’t the project itself which caused a stir in the American crowd but it was her speech, mentioning her mother Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro, and how she feels standing in the same place her mother once was. She began to speak out highly of art and culture bringing individuals everywhere together and to transcend their difficulties because no matter how much time has passed, art and culture are still at the heart of every being.
The Golden Globes never fails to snub crews from awards, and this year it has yet to change. The Globes has been used as the Oscars, Academy Awards, board of predictions. One notable snub of the night was the young actor Timothée Chalamet not winning any awards no matter how many nominations he received for Dune: Part Two and The Complete Unknown. He has solidified himself as a prominent figure in film as a talented actor and in society as a personality. Chalamet was the front runner for all his nominations, based on many critiques. Fans were highly disappointed to see the young man miss out on four awards which were against Brody. This places a hot spotlight for the close knit race of Best Actor in the Oscars.
Another snub that night was Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy being awarded to Hacks. Hacks has maintained itself under the radar in major media outlets causing confusion in the sea of viewers at home. Abbott Elementary was perceived as the winner, once it was nominated in that category. It soars through recommendation platforms and clips continue to go viral because of its natural comedic timing. Abbott Elementary is very familiar to show watchers and has been seen all over the world. While people claim ‘Hacks’ to be a Joan River-esque type portrayal with prominent women leads, it doesn’t mean Abbott Elementary should’ve been booted as runner up.
Not to be forgotten, ‘Baby Reindeer,’ a major gem of a series, went home with two globes in the bag. Expect more of this show to be critically acclaimed in the future with its eerie showcase of obsession turned into stalking because you are just simply living.
Tune in to see who continues winning at the Oscars on March 2, on ABC.
