Tribute Album to A$AP Yams
November 4, 2016
There’s something cooking in the streets with the Oct. 31 release of “Cozy Tapes: Vol. 1 Friends,” by the Harlem New York based rap group “A$AP mob.” It’s been over two years since the group release of their last project “Lords Never Worry.”
This new album is more than just a collection of music, it’s a tribute and remembrance to the group’s founder A$AP Yams who died Jan. 18, 2015, from an accidental drug overdose. The tragic overdose hit the group hard but no one was affected more than A$AP Rocky, head front man of the group. He told MTV he lost a brother when Yams died, and he didn’t know how to deal with it all so he hit the studio. Rocky added that he got the group together and produced this album so the world could see Yams in his purist form, as a visionary.
Yams lasting image is everywhere. You hear him throughout the album. You feel his soul as the instrumentals plays. You even get to see a picture of Yams on the album cover. “Cozy Tapes: Vol. 1 Friends,” is a final salute to the founder of one of hip hop’s most influential groups.
The group made sure to honor their fallen leader by producing one of their best bodies of work since they formed in 2006. One thing that makes this release stand out more than their others is its ability to maintain the same message as before but blend it with the youthful culture of today.
We get a chance to witness this blend of sounds on the second track “Crazy Brazy.” This song has the repetitive, mumble-rap sound and strong drum machine that gives it a trap vibe. The lyrical message still remains the same though, showing love to the family and the culture of New York.
One of the most unexpected guest appearances comes from London based rapper Skepta on the seventh track, “Put that on my set.” In the verses, Skepta and A$AP Rocky both claim their love for their respected musical families. Skepta talks about his own musical group “Man Better Know,” and his willingness to stand by his brothers no matter how much individual fame he receives. Rocky can relate to this, as he says he has always been in the lime light and received the most fame but that never steps in the way of his loyalty to the mob.
It seems like no mixtape or album can be a hit without the vocals of rappers Lil Uzi Vert or Lil Yachty. Luckily for the listeners, this album includes both of them on separate tracks. On track 10 “Runner”, we get a taste of Lil Uzi Vert who lends his unique hook making talents and gives the track a catchy anthem for the listener to bob their head to. Lil Yachty steps in on the next track “Bachelor.” This song has the biggest chance to have radio success because it has all the elements of a great song, catchy words and a smooth beat to match.
“Cozy Tapes: Vol. 1 Friends” is a masterpiece because of the raw emotions thrown out in every track and the multiple sound blends. After listening to the album several times, fans won’t be able to get the catchy tunes out of their heads because the album is consuming and soon they will be rapping the lyrics unintentionally. Once the earphones are in, fans enter into a new phase of hip hop, a phase where Atlanta trap music is blended with New York style, a combination rarely seen mixed so well.
