Staying Chill with Iggy’s Italian Ice
February 12, 2016
Baskin Robbins, Cold Stone Creamery, Braum’s, Dairy Queen: with all these successful ice cream parlors you wouldn’t think there could be another one added to the competitive list. But yet, I happened to stumble across Iggy’s, a new Italian ice joint, which replaced the yogurt shop Purple Berry.
Walking into Iggy’s for the first time can be a tad bit confusing, but as you go through the process of ordering it becomes much more simple. If you have never been, the employees will assist you by explaining the sizes and the variety of ice cream they offer. Once you decide the size and flavors, simply write them on the cup using a sharpie and the employee will get started on your order.
Based on the quantity, there are two sizes: a small and a large. The small is technically three scoops, and the large is five. Both of them are reasonably priced, with the small being $4 and the large $6. These scoops are very large, so a small should be satisfying.
Homemade ice cream and Italian ice are offered in close to 30 flavors like sweet mango and savory salted caramel. Customers can even mix flavors if they choose, making an even larger range of choices. Putting vanilla ice cream on the bottom and root beer Italian ice on top creates a unique taste.
Italian Ice is similar to a pre-flavored snow cone, meaning that the ice is mixed with sugar and fruit juices. After trying a few choices, customers will realize the fruit flavors taste exactly like the fruit.
According to an employee, Cookie Monster is the most popular ice cream flavor. The blue appearance might frighten you off but it’s a mixture of several different types of cookies. It’s truly mouthwatering.
Another great choice is the German chocolate, which has a slight coconut taste that leaves you wanting more. The ice cream is really smoothing and rich in flavor. It’s so sweet it can be difficult to finish.
Although Purple Berry originally fell through, Iggy’s has proved to be a thriving business, as evident by the line out the door. Between a cool environment and a great location near Newsome Stadium, this ice cream and Italian ice joint offers amazing service and quality desserts year round for any patron looking for a tasty treat.
