Segall is Extraordinary but Not for Everyone

Multi-instrumentalist Ty Segall, who has exploded on the music scene with hits like “Finger,” “Drag” and “Imaginary Person”, is back and better than ever. Segall released a new rock album titled “Emotional Mugger” on Jan. 22.

The album starts off very quiet, like someone left the microphone on before recording. Listeners, who first hear footsteps walking into the room, will be confused. Is this an album by Ty Segall or is this an audio only movie by Alfred Hitchcock? Next you hear keys jangling and someone closes the door. Then the song hits you unexpectedly. “Squealer” is the first thing that can be heard and it continues with the chorus croaking, “get outta here.”

It’s very impressive but there was one track that stood. “W.U.O.T.W.S.” was different from any music I’ve heard from Segall or other musicians. The song switched audio channels throughout, meaning he played two separate songs on two different sides of the headphones. The left earplug was playing drums with little snippets of the previous beats, while the right was making very unique noises. It’s a pleasure to listen too.

The song titled, “Big Baby Man (I Want A Mommy),” was possibly the worst song on the album because it was difficult to understand his mumbling words and overpowering instruments.

This album was well written but it’s more for fans of Segall and people who can handle distortion in music. Anyone who is sick of the mainstream, overplayed music on the radio will find it treasure.
