The Visit Heavy on Suspense Not Horror
September 17, 2015
Over 15 years ago, Director M. Night Shyamalan first made headlines with a twisted plot for the supernatural thriller The Sixth Sense. Many regard this as one of the best films ever made. In his latest work, Shyamalan scores again with a unique plot twist. The scariest thing about this plot is that this has the potential to happen in real life.
The Visit begins on a quiet day. It starts with a mother (Kathryn Hahn) talking into a camera about her childhood, specifically the boyfriend her parents disapproved of when she left home 15 years ago. After hearing about how their parents’ relationship destroyed her connection with her parents. In an effort to patch things up, her children, Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenhould), are sent to stay with their maternal grandparents for a week. The key issue here is that they have never seen their grandparents before. The kids, who want to document everything for a video they are making, show us an up-close view through the camera.
The grandparents seem normal at first but as the movie rolls on it becomes apparent that something is seriously wrong with Nana (Deanna Dunigan) and Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie). The strange and disturbing events begin at night. After 9:30 p.m., the grandparents begin to engage in unusual acts that you would never expect from an elderly couple.
This film does not feature a lot of truly scary parts that would make you jump, however it appeals to more of the suspenseful, blood and gore fans. Some scenes are just down right disgusting and nerve wrecking. Despite this, the plot is actually quite humorous. No not with jokes, but the way the characters react in certain situations leaves the audience laughing instead of cowering in fear over the scene. Some jokes fail to connect but there are still a good number of laughs. The best thing about the movie is the plot twist. I won’t spoil it, but I guarantee you will leave saying “oh my gosh, I did not see that coming.”
Do not go to this movie if you are looking to be scared. After all, it is only PG-13. The majority of the scary moments were already in the previews. If you enjoy true suspense, this won’t disappoint. I’d give it a 7 of out 10.
