Pentatonix Releases New Holiday Album

The hometown super-group has done it again. Naming the album after their original track, Pentatonix (PTX) released “That’s Christmas To Me” back in October. Since then it has gone gold. The group previously shared that they aim to be the first mainstream a cappella group, and it seems they are well on their way.

Pentatonix has been recognized for their own special arrangement style. They can take any song, original and covers and add elements of classical, soul, reggae, dubstep and pop.

As a long-time super fan, I see this album as proof that PTX has a never-ending sleeve of tricks and surprises. They take what we know as classic, timeless songs and make a more modern version, while still incorporating themes of festivity.

The album starts off with a traditional song, “Hark! The Herald Angel Sings,” in which the group has added their own special mix to it. They completely bring the song to life by adding their own upbeat style allowing the song to completely set you into a joyful mood.

They continue the trend of adding twists to classics with “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” by starting with elements of hip-hop allowing the percussionist, Kevin, to show off his voice and abilities. The song is both playful and festive.

My personal favorite is “White Winter Hymnal,” originally written by The Fleet Foxes. The group incorporated the complex beat to the song by choreographing possibly the most amazing clapping routine I have ever seen. Though it isn’t what we’d consider a traditional Christmas song, it takes you from the upbeat celebration into a serene mood. With this song, I believe they continue proving the idea that the group can do it all.

It was also nice to see each person take the lead on songs. The bass singer, Avi, steps out in “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”. Rather than just seeing one side of what he can do, he adds to the mood with his mellow and soulful voice. The others step back and share the spotlight.

One of the most popular songs of the album, “Mary, Did You Know,” quickly shifts the mood sending a reminder of what the season is really about. It speaks beautifully about the birth of Christ, his journey and the impact on our lives. The group did nothing but justice to the song. It’s amazing to watch the video.

Appealing to all groups and ages, the album ends with the bonus track “Let It Go.” Personally, I can’t get enough of “Frozen,” and it’s a joy to have the song be added to the traditional music. I would even say it’s just as great, dare I say, if not better than the original.

It’s time to stray away from the same old cheesy holiday songs and jump into this journey of an album. Pentatonix has truly produced an edgy and refreshing album that truly envelops the spirit of the season and the many ways to experience and enjoy it.
