‘Kauai’ is Mix of Beach Vibe with Hip Hop
October 17, 2014
He’s the jack of all trades. Between comedic gigs, shooting movies and television shows and writing for other people, he still makes time to write his own music. Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, has finally blessed the world with more of his music. On Oct. 3, Gambino released his second extended play (EP), “Kauai.”
His new EP gives us a pop-beach vibe but it still incorporates Gambino’s hip hop feel. With only seven tracks, it is amazing how much of an impact the EP has. There are only six songs on the EP, because the seventh one is a remix of “3005” off of “Because of the Internet.” It is definitely worth the $7, plus all the proceeds go to a foundation helping the people of Kauai rebuild their island.
For each song there’s a story. Gambino has always been good at telling stories as seen in his first two studio albums; “Camp” and “Because of the Internet.” Now Gambino has a lot of critics who claim he is an imitator, but I don’t believe that is true. Artists sometime sound the same to many people, but with the surprise release of this EP it will prove those critics wrong. The sound and the beats used in “Kauai” aren’t like his two albums before. There is a softer tone, which shows us a different side to Gambino. The songs are placed on the album in perfect order. The power of the music builds with each song, but still keeps the beach vibe.
Although this EP can be a number one, it isn’t his best work. It doesn’t measure up to “Because of the Internet” in any form. That album was flawless. The music isn’t like his previous albums. No doubt everything he does is original in its own way, whether it’s the lyrics or the beat itself. The EP is kind of a trick when it comes to what genre to categorize it as. Gambino is a hip-hop artist, but the songs do have a pop vibe. Regardless, the EP is hip hop/rap.
I would not only recommend this EP to other people, but also all of his other albums. Gambino is a brilliant artist that most people will enjoy because his music is relatable. Another great thing is that the day before the release of the EP he released a free mix tape, which I also suggest fans listen to.
