Tired of all the generic name shooting games out there like Call of Duty, Battlefield and Splinter Cell?  If so try Blacklight Retribution. The first person shooter game, developed by Zombie Studios, is free. The downloadable game, currently available only on the PC, revolves around multiplayer combat on different wide but closed off maps with different game modes.

The best part of the game, what sets it a part from any other, is the Hyper Reality Visor (HRV), which is triggered by pressing the “V” key. The character will then turn on the visor and is able to see through walls for a short period of time.

During this time the player can see weapon depots, enemies, friends and other items around the map without losing the location of their surroundings. This helps to eliminate the problem of “camping players” and even the newest players get around better.

The second crucial aspect of the game is the high level of customization available. Players can change anything about the character, from their armor and taunts to the camouflage and helmet design. The best part is that a player gets to customize the gun too, and not just what type it is either. One can change everything about it, from the stock to the muzzle, and even put on a weapon tag to add some decoration. This ensures that in the game, players can make a weapon that fits their gameplay style, as almost no gun in the game is going to be exactly like another.

One of the flaws during gameplay is a series of bugs. For example, clipping into a wall, or accidentally choosing one item in a player’s inventory instead of another even though the right button was pressed.

This is an extremely fun game to play. It has a sort of RPG aspect to it based off of the customization ability. A few bugs may still stand, but Blacklight Retribution’s addictive, fast-paced gameplay will leave people asking why they had played Call of Duty for so long. The game gets a 4 out of 5 in my review.
