The author of The Bone Season, Samantha Shannon, is already being compared to J.K Rowling.

A creative combination of the world of magic in a futuristic dystopia, the Bone Season by Samantha Shannon will captivate the hearts and minds of all fantasy and action lovers alike.

The book, set in 2159, tells the story of Paige Mahoney, 19, who is a young clairvoyant in London with a secret life. Using her wits and connection to a magical world known as the aethera, she is part of the most formidable syndicate in the criminal underworld of those who have unnatural powers.

One night she is stopped by government Scion Underguards and for the first time fatally uses her gift. Captured by guards as she tries to flee, Paige is taken to the secret city of Oxford where she is under the rule of Rephaim, beings more powerful than people like her.

She is one of the many captured in Bone Season 20 but unlike the others, she is immediately recognized as a valuable clairvoyant. Assigned to the Warden, the blood consort of the supreme blood-sovereign, Paige is trained to be even more powerful. He is an enigma to her but as much as she wants to hate him, she discovers that in order to free herself and the rest of the voyants she may have to trust him.

The intricate story Shannon creates about Paige and her continual defiance in the face of authority is similar to that of Katniss in Hunger Games. Character development is evident in the flashbacks to her past and the events that made her such a well-trained voyant.

Another main character is the Warden, who surprises the reader with more depth than initially thought. However, the author could have delved more into his past to further bring light to the reason behind his motives.

The relationship between the two main characters had an interesting dynamic and leaves the reader wanting more in the end

The book ends with unanswered questions and the promise of more. Shannon, a young British writer, is already being compared to J.K. Rowling, and rightfully so. This seven book deal may just be the next hit series. Readers of Hunger Games, Divergent and Harry Potter should definitely grab a copy and step into this mystical world.
