Dressing Up Vs. Dressing Down
February 12, 2015
I always plan what I am wearing the night before because I know the stress that comes with not having the right outfit, but a big debate among many teenage girls is whether or not you should dress up or dress down for school.
Most people assume that if a girl is dressed up for school that she is automatically trying to impress somebody. I don’t agree with that at all. Why can’t a girl take the time to make herself look good for school without having someone judge her for it? I love wearing heels because they make me feel tall and confident. Yes, some girls take it to the extreme by wearing short skirts during the wintertime, but then again they have a right to wear what they want.
Then there are the people that assume that if a girl is not dressed up for school, she just doesn’t care about what she looks like. I can attest to the fact that some days you just don’t care because you’re having a bad day. I have had too many of those to count. It shouldn’t matter if a girl wants to wear sweats, running shoes and have her hair in a messy bun every day. You are already stuck in this place we call school for eight hours, so why not be comfortable?
I lie somewhere in between. There are some days where I really don’t care what I look like because I’m in a funk, but then there are days when I want to dress up just so everyone can see my outfit.
I don’t usually care what people have to say about me, but outfits have always been a concern for me throughout school. When I was younger, my mom would dress me up really cute every day, even for daycare. She got the saying in my head that you always need to look nice because you never know who you might see, which I guess is sort of true. However, it shouldn’t matter what you’re wearing.
At the end of the day you should wear what you want because you are in charge of your body. If it makes you feel good about yourself then by all means, wear it. You shouldn’t be stressing about your outfit because you are afraid people are going to judge you. It shouldn’t matter at all because you are your own person.
