Those who are interested in helping tutor and earning volunteer hours can join DASH, a new club which focuses on high school students helping area elementary and intermediate schools.
“We provide a connection between young adults and the community, fostering a better and stronger school district and love for education,” President Yenny Ho, who is a junior, said. “We focus solely on education compared to other volunteer based clubs. Our goal is to eventually establish a DASH chapter in every high school.”
This is the first year the club has been on campus.
“It’s a student-led, non-profit organization created within the school,” junior Sadik Bade said. “The main purpose is to help teachers and students out, whether it be tutoring young students or providing supplies that are needed.”
Students have been tutoring after school.
“We have a weekly schedule of tutoring sessions that members can sign up to come to,” Bade said. “We sit down with the kids and help them with their work or any homework they have. We usually have around 10 to 12 kids participating in tutoring sessions.”
For many, this is their first time being a role model for kids.
“DASH has been an essential part of my schedule and keeps me disciplined,” Bade said. “It makes me feel good to help others by being there for the kids and the community. I like to help kids who are academically challenged.”
Members support schools in different ways depending on the need.
“Every school is a case-by-case basis,” Ho said. “For example, we do in-class assistance at Della Icenhower Intermediate School, after school and UIL tutoring at Charlene McKinzey Middle School, or support after school enrichment programs at the Grand Prairie Recreation Center like The Epic.”
The club assists students with earning community service hours.
“Not only are we dedicated to helping teachers and students,” she said. “We are also an outlet for high school students to get their hours and locally help their community.”
The volunteer based club offers around 250 hours each academic year.
“We offer more hours than any club at Timberview,” Ho said. “Our high schoolers have every opportunity to get their required amount of hours.”
Interested students can join through the BAND App.
“Anyone can join our group through our Instagram at DASH.tview,” Bade said. “We contact schools to ask if anyone needs any help in any type of academics, and then we would go to that school.”
