With a district record of 5-3 last year, Varsity Football is starting the season with an overall record of 1-2. The team won the first game 27-0, against Kimball High School on Aug. 29.
“It has been a great transition,” Coach Jacody Coleman said. “They have worked hard to prepare for our season this fall.”
The game originally scheduled for Aug. 28 was delayed due to weather conditions and moved to the next school day.
“It benefited the team because we were able to get out of class early,” junior Jason Sydnor said. “We were able to lock in for our game at 1 p.m.”
This season the team has a new head coach.
“We want to win our district,” Head Coach Coleman said. “We want to be one of the best teams in the state.”
After losing round one of the playoffs to Lovejoy High School last season, players said they are motivated to make it further this year.
“There isn’t anything left to do but go all the way,” junior Noah Olivares said. “We
have been putting work in.”
The team lost key players who graduated last season, Olivares said.
“We are one of the youngest varsity groups we have had in a while,” Olivares said. “We have a strong, young team.”
Varsity lost their second game 20-21 against Denton Ryan, on Sept. 4.
“We have kids eager to learn,” Coach Coleman said. “Team goals I want us to achieve this year are playing as a team that is physically and mentally tough.”
Coleman previously coached at Skyline High School.
“The coaching staff all have next-level experience,” Olivares said. “They know what it takes to get to where we need to go.”
The team lost an away game 27-35 against Argyle, on Sept. 12.
The next away game is Homecoming on Friday, against Colleyville Heritage at Newsom Stadium at 7 p.m.
“Come out and watch us play, we are the most entertaining team to come watch in Texas,” Sydnor said. “We are going to state because of the talent, discipline and the people we have around us.”
