Varsity Boys Baseball Team wins against Summit
April 7, 2017
With a score of 5-4, the Varsity Boys Baseball Team defeated the Mansfield Summit Jaguars on Tuesday night at home. The team now is 10-9 and fourth in district standings.
“We played a good, hard fought game,” Head Coach Bobby Johnson said. “We had great defense execution and our bats got hot. When both of those are going good for us, we tend to win games.”
The two teams haven’t faced each other since the Varsity MISD Invitational on March 10, in which the Wolves lost 4-2.
“Everyone in this district is capable of beating each other any given night if one team isn’t playing well,” junior Tres Thomas. “We just have to make sure we handle the little things so we can win.”
Last year the team only won two games during the regular season.
“The group has become more like family,” senior Demarcus Burrell said. “Over the summer we all worked out together and that brought us closer to one another. The bond built after a lot of hours in the batting cages strengthened the team and unified us. I believe that is what has helped us obtain so many wins this year.”
The team hasn’t made it out of district play since 2015.
“I like our chances this year at making playoffs,” Thomas said “We’re playing way better than last year. Our pitchers are hitting their strike zones and offensively we’re finding ways to score. If we keep it up a deep run could be in our future.”
The next game will be against the number one ranked team in the district, the Red Oak Hawks, today at Red Oak.
“They’re a great team but so are we,” Johnson said. “We’ve both been playing good baseball these past few weeks so it should be a pretty close game.”
