Varsity Softball Advances to Regional Finals
After going against Richland last weekend, the Varsity Softball Team has advanced to Regional Finals against Lubbock Coronado at Abilene Christian University Friday and Saturday.
“Led by pitcher Mariah Denson and an outstanding defensive performance by Alex Taylor and Chelsea Luddeke, the Lady Wolves put together another great series,” Coach Donya Mooney said.
They defeated Richland, who was ranked third in the state.
“It’s really awesome because they (Richland) came in so confident and undermining us,” senior Mayan Meza Tovar said. “We went out there and just did what we had to do. That’s why we came out with the victory.”
If the team wins, they will advance to the final round.
“Should we win the first game in the state tournament, then we would go to the actual state game and play for the state title,” senior Maddie Munoz said.
Mooney has made playoffs a priority.
“We have been working consistently since August on our offense and hitting since we felt like we came up a little short last year offensively,” she said.
Despite being so close to a state game, the girls are trying to keep thing light, Meza Tovar said.
“We’re pretty much doing the same thing we’ve been doing which involves a lot of laughing and goofing around,” she said. “We’re a very goofy team, but we always do what we’re supposed to. That’s what helps us get the win in the end.”
The coach is confident they will do well.
Mooney said, “With a strong pitcher, solid team defense and improved hitting, we feel like we have put ourselves in the best possible position to win.”
