Is Super Bowl, Super Matchup?
Everyone get ready, buy your wings and cheer for your favorite team because it is that time of the year again. This Super Bowl Sunday is the most exciting day in the NFL season. The top team in the AFC and NFC go head-to-head to determine the XLVIII Super Bowl Champions.
This season’s teams are the Denver Broncos from the AFC, and the Seattle Seahawks from the NFC. Even though they both had the highest standing in their division with the same record of 15-3, the Broncos should come out on top.
While Quarterback Russell Wilson has only been playing for the Seahawks for two years, Peyton Manning has been in the NFL for over 16. The Indianapolis Colts drafted Manning to the NFL in 1998. The Seattle Seahawks drafted Wilson in 2012.
Over Manning’s 16 years of playing in the NFL he has a total of 64,964 passing yards, Wilson with 2 years has 6,475 yards. This experience of playing professional football gives Manning a big advantage over Wilson.
Manning has had a record breaking year, breaking 11 this season alone. He is the No. 1 quarterback in the league with 5,477-yards. Wilson has thrown for 3,357-yards in the 2013 season. This equals a 2,120-yard gap between Manning and Wilson. Another record Manning broke was for the most touchdown passes thrown in a season with 55 passes total, while Wilson had 26.
Denver has the No.1 offense in the league. Sports writer Doug Brown wrote, “It’s like a full grown Siberian tiger in an underground pit fight against a blind toy poodle with three legs.” Well said, Doug; that’s exactly what it is.
Even though Seattle has a great defense, the offense is what really matters because that’s what puts points on the board. Obviously, the more accurate quarterback, who knows exactly where to place the ball to their receivers is Manning.
A twist to the match-up is the game day forecast. Over ten inches of snow fell on the Met Life Stadium within the last month. Weather forecasters predict the outdoor, playing conditions will even be worse on game day. There is even talk of postponing the game if the weather becomes hazardous.
Should this concern fans? Maybe. If the game was to be played inside a dome, the Broncos would easily have the win, but it is outside and snowing then this might limit Manning and his receivers.
Cold weather can cause players to have reduced muscle strength and their joints to become stiff; this could also affect how the players run and how fast they can react.
Despite all this, I believe everything comes down to the quarterback. With Manning and Wilson, that isn’t even a super matchup.
