Club Expenses Can Add Up

Choosing a school club can be tricky. One minute you’re signing up, the next minute you owe money for fees that you didn’t know existed. Good news for you, here is a financial blueprint just so you know what you may be getting yourself into. The clubs’ fees are ranked in order of the most to the least expensive.

1. One of the biggest student organizations in the school, Student Council, has a $30 application fee, which includes your club shirt. Although the club creates numerous shirts for the entire student body that are optional to purchase, members are expected to buy them in support of the school. At the beginning of the school year, the club goes to the legendary Camp Thurman for team building, which is $15. All of these exciting events add up in cash. Just be sure to have a great savings plan, especially for Hog Week because you will want to participate.

2. The very spirited Maroon Platoon comes in second place with a $25 fee that goes to your mandatory t-shirt. The shirt guarantees free access to Varsity Football games for the school year. If you enjoy cheering for your favorite player, doing celebration dances over touchdowns or just seeing the other school take an “L”, then $25 might be worth it.

3. One of the newer organizations, Timberview African Students Association (T.A.S.A) has a $15 fee that funds numerous charity events and fundraisers such as book drives and poetry night. Anyone is welcome to join, so don’t be put off by the name. Although they’ve had successful fundraisers, members occasionally donate out of their own pockets to support their cause.

Coming in at a tie with T.A.S.A, Key Club also has a $15 fee. If you are slacking in volunteer hours, this club will surely help get you those numbers. This is the place you want to be if serving others is important to you.

4. Art Club has a $10 fee that goes toward art supplies and shirts. Like other clubs, it gives back with community service every season. Don’t worry; you don’t have to be Picasso to join. In addition, Art Club hosts the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE). There are also numerous opportunities to go on out-of-state field trips and earn volunteer hours, so keep your wallet full.

5. Last but not least, Nerd Club, which is run mostly by donations. If anime, manga, sci-fi or foreign shows are your recreational preference, then it may be worth looking into. Although the shirt costs around $20, it’s optional to purchase. In this club, it seems like the only item you are spending is your time.
