Drill Team Tryouts Approach
January 27, 2016
The mandatory parent meetings for the Celebrities Drill Team tryouts will be Jan. 28 and Feb. 8 at 7 p.m., in the Mansfield PAC.
“I look for students who are hard workers, quick learners and who have the potential to be molded into Celebrities,” Director Ekena Wilkins said.
The Tryout Clinic is April 4 to 7 from 4:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., in the Main Gym. The tryouts are April 8, at 7 p.m., in the Legacy High School Gym.
“Candidates must learn a jazz routine that may contain any of the following: turns, leaps, kicks and a hip hop section,” Wilkins said.
There will also be a Tryout Pre-Clinic Intensive for $20, on April 1, from 5 to 8 p.m., for prospective members.
“I still have to prepare myself to be more confident because I not only have to be able to dance, but I have to help the other girls one-on-one and offer any advice I have,” current member Lisa Wilson said.
Wilkins said multiple qualities are expected of drill team members.
“Celebs must follow high moral and academic standards, so dancing is just one of the characteristics of a Celebrity,” Wilkins said. “(A candidate) needs to be a star student, leader, performer and citizen.”
Wilkins has high hopes for the future.
“I’m hoping to continue building the legacy the Celebrity name already holds,” she said. “I also hope to see the wonderful bond the girls have developed with each other grow as the new rookies join the team.”
