Key Club Continues Trick or Treating
November 4, 2015
In an effort to raise money for UNICEF, Key Club members have been carrying around orange boxes to help the “Trick-Or-Treat” campaign.
“It (UNICEF) is a worthy cause because it’s kids helping kids on a global level,” Key Club Sponsor Pauline Edwards said.
The fundraiser is being held to bring awareness to eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus.
“Around the world, a newborn dies every 11 minutes from tetanus because they don’t have access to the vaccination,” Edwards said. “ Only $1.80 can prevent a woman and her future newborns from getting infected (so) to some people, it’s simply taking out the change from their pocket but to others it’s saving their lives.”
Junior Journi Robinson donated $38.
“I (raised) money at school mostly,” she said. “But I also gave the donation box to my mother and sister once, so they could collect (money) at their schools.”
Robinson said she was very motivated.
She said, “Knowing that all the money would go to helping the unfortunate children and mothers really motivated me to raise as much money as I could.”
However, junior Daniel Penza made the collection into something more.
“I’ve always loved to help others, but other members and I decided to challenge each other to see who can make the most,” he said. “So not only did we collect money to help others, we collected money as a little competition to have fun while collecting.”
To donate, find a Key Club member.
“I would say my favorite part about this project is seeing all the people willing to donate their money,” Robinson said. “A lot of people asked me what the donation box was for and simply put money in. I didn’t even have to ask them for a donation.”
Although the project isn’t over, Robinson is already looking toward the future.
“I’m definitely looking forward to doing this again next year,” she said. “Raising money for reasons like this make me happy and make me feel like I’m making a difference.”
