Common Releases Social Awakening Album
November 10, 2016
Common surprised fans last week with his new album “Black America Again.” Like him, this album is deeply rooted in the beliefs of the black community’s ability to rise up like once before and become unified in the fight for equality. Listening to the album it reminds you of the old school generation of MC’s, the group of rappers focused on lyricism and overall positive messages.
The poetic vibes and R&B tone of the album gives it the elements of a spoken word performance. This wasn’t done by accident, as he is known for his poetic wordplay. Back in 2011, he was even invited to the White House by President Barack Obama for an “Evening of Poetry.”
In the album, Common doesn’t run from present day problems, instead he addresses them with a lyrical prowess like no other artist out right now. He isn’t afraid to offend the listener because he believes the truth needs to be exposed, and the truth to him is that African Americans have to take some of the blame for the inequalities today. On the track “Black America Again,” he does this exceptionally well. The message and tone is clear, it’s time for the African American community to fix some of its wrongs.
On the track “Love Star,” Common reminds his young sister that black females are the queens of the community and he tells his younger brothers to treat them as so. It’s refreshing to see a rapper still upholding the good values of being a gentleman toward women since many rappers today have placed their misogynistic way of thinking into the minds of young people today.
The song “Letter to The Free” is the most soulful track on the album. Gospel vocals and lyrics give the track a spiritual tone. Common raps about his hope for God’s intervention and guidance in the days to come.
This isn’t just an album, it’s a plea for change. Common sees what is going on and is trying to provide a positive message the best way he knows, connecting with fans through his music. “Black America Again” is the album that brings Hip Hop back to its roots with deep lyrics aimed at social issues, topped off with a nice soulful beat on top. Fans looking for a classic sound, should check out the album.
