The Disappointments Room Doesn’t Disappoint
September 16, 2016
The new thriller “The Disappointments Room” is loosely based on true events and stars Kate Beckinsale, Mel Raido and Duncan Joiner. Although the film has an original storyline, the stereotypical paranormal aspects thrown in draws away from the big picture.
The movie starts off like many other scary films. A young couple with a small child move into a new home, looking for a fresh start after a major tragedy occurs. When the family pulls into the driveway on a rainy night and viewers get a first look at the house, the audience can automatically predict they’ve made a mistake.
Shortly after the family begins to settle in, Dana (Beckinsale) discovers something odd. She finds a small, unusual room in the attic that is not on the floor plan. Then the paranormal experiences begin. You never can tell if the house is actually haunted or if Dana just makes everything up in her head.
The storyline itself is very interesting but the predictable details make it unoriginal and boring. Throughout the film, there were times where I was on the edge of my seat and then times where I was waiting for something new to happen. There are also a few random characters thrown in who don’t play much of a part to the plot. The scare factor is low; you will probably cry out more than you will jump from fear.
However, the acting was phenomenal. It was very raw and believable. While watching, I felt the same emotion each actor was portraying and became attached to every character.
If you are in the mood for a good scare this film isn’t what you’re looking for. Nonetheless, this film has a strong story with a great group of actors and is definitely a movie to see.
